Heel spurs, medically known as plantar fasciitis, occur as a result of inflammation of the plantar fascia tissue on the sole of the foot. This condition causes swelling and pain in the soft tissue that extends from the heel to the toes. Not every patient has a sharp bony prominence on an X-ray; diagnosis is usually based on clinical findings.
Symptoms include heel pain with the first steps out of bed in the morning, increased pain upon rising after sitting for a long time, and severe discomfort when walking on hard surfaces. The pain may decrease with walking throughout the day, but it may persist.
Risk factors include being overweight, wearing hard-soled shoes, and standing for long periods.
Treatment includes rest, foot exercises, proper shoe selection, and orthopedic rehabilitation. In severe cases, orthopedic braces or surgery may be necessary.
With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, heel spur symptoms can be controlled and quality of life improved. It is important to consult a specialist when experiencing heel pain.
